This February thirty one boarding schools from New Hampshire to Deleware will compare energy use in campus buildings to baseline metrics in a competition that began at Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA), in Exeter, NH. Originally an intramural competition in 2003, PEA joined with a dozen other schools in February 2007 to create the first interscholastic rivalry.
Besides competing, students from each school will produce and show videos about energy conservation. Staff and faculty will also be involved.
Students have invented or discovered interesting ways to gather school spirit for the cause of conservation with songs and rallies. Students and faculty at Holderness School, also in New Hampshire, held a Jeopardy-style game between Holderness sports teams, answering questions about energy conservation. Millbrook School, the school that decreased their usage the most in four weeks, in Millbrook, NY, reminded themselves that every person was important, that little things, all going in the same direction, add up.
Participants are urged to consider continuing conservation beyond the end of the challenge.
The challenge web site, hosted by PEA, includes videos and stories from the 2007 challenge.
