Energy use in cell phones more complex at closer look

Post by shawn »

Recent cell phones, with their video-capture, flash photography, music and broadcast playback, and long talk-times have complex power requirements, and battery-design is not the only approach to improving performance. I was struck by how there are different voltages used by the different components, from 1.2V for the ultra-efficient processors to 2kV if the phone includes a xenon strobe:

I think a good exercise for my students would be to generate various voltages from one AAA battery, then compare designs for how long they can have the battery last.
