“The true meaning of life is to plant a tree under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” nelson henderson The underlying goal of EE is to plant the seeds today for a future where people are inspired to become active stewards of our natural environment. The most powerful buildings and places encourage individuals to engage with the environment and imagine the possibilities for a better future. Unfortunately, many EE organizations are housed in outdated or deteriorating facilities which hamper their ability to offer essential educational programs and inspire those whom they serve. Planning and developing successful, sustainably designed environmental education facilities requires vision, the ability to obtain political & financial support for the project and strong leadership. This session will include a panel of architects from the Pacific Northwest who have planned and designed some of the country’s most successful sustainably designed EE centers. The session will be moderated by the Director of the North Cascades Institute, an organization that has recently completed a successful fundraising campaign and built an outstanding, highly sustainable facility. Attendees who are contemplating expanding existing facilities or developing new ones will be exposed to “lessons learned” from a number of case studies including tips on fundraising, land acquisition, establishing public/private partnerships, programming and other issues associated with development of a successful sustainably designed facility. The panelists will share how other organizations have moved from dream to reality, and then allow ample time for questions and an interactive discussion with the audience.
