Description: Know the flow of energy in your school building! This course focuses on evaluating the energy use in school buildings and guiding K-12 teachers towards utilizing the school building as a learning tool for energy education. Take an informative tour of a school building's energy systems and learn how you and your students can make a difference on your school's utility bill. Each participant will receive an Energy and Your School Activity Guide with 14 K-12 activities. Participants in the course will develop action plans or unit plans highlighting opportunities in energy efficiency and conservation in their schools.

Goal: As a result of participating in NRES 734, teachers will learn…

· The basic energy systems within a school building

· How schools consume and are billed for energy use

· How building occupants can reduce energy consumption

· Ways to incorporate energy systems into curriculum

· How to develop an effective energy action plan

· Who to communicate with for energy-related needs

Cost: Focus on Energy and select Wisconsin utilities provide scholarships, and participants pay a co-pay. The course includes one graduate credit from UWSP (and all materials) to participants who are practicing K-12 teachers from Wisconsin schools in their territories.

Expectations: Participants are responsible for paying the co-pay, attending the course and completing a class assignment to be turned in by an arranged date after the course. The assignment is designed to have teachers create a product that will support their efforts to initiate energy efficiency plans in their school buildings and energy education concepts in their classrooms.

NRES 734 is only open to teachers in the district where it is being held because it is specific to each district's energy goals. If you are interested in a NRES 734 course in your district please complete the NRES 734 Course Request Form.
