Energy science, efficiency, conseration, and carbon

The Cape Light Compact, Columbia Gas, NSTAR, National Grid and Western Massachusetts Electric Company and the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project are excited to announce the upcoming Boston Area Energy Workshop to be held at Boston Marriott Peabody in Peabody, MA on November 18, 2014. Classroom teachers (4-12) have a unique opportunity to learn energy in a fun and exciting way!

Thanks to the sponsors there is no cost to attend the workshop.

Breakfast and lunch are provided. Substitute reimbursement available upon request.

The workshop will teach the concepts of force, motion, light, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism, and energy transformations through hands-on activities and provide lessons to monitor and measure energy use at home and at school. Additional curriculum materials to teach about energy and energy resources – including electricity and energy efficiency – will be provided.

The NEED Project includes teacher-tested educational materials, evaluation techniques and tools, recognition of student achievement, and professional development for educators. All NEED learning activities are aligned to Massachusetts standards.

Pick up NEED materials and conference supplies. Continental breakfast will be served. NEED curriculum kits are sponsored for each teacher attending the workshop. Packets include supplemental classroom materials, Energy Infobooks at 3 grade levels, and much more! Take a pre-workshop assessment.



8:15 a.m. Welcome and Introductions

Meet your fellow participants and the sponsors of today’s workshop. Review goals and objectives for the workshop and begin planning ways to use the NEED materials and training in your school.



8:30 a.m. The Science of Energy

Learn more about the forms of energy while experimenting with the NEED Project’s Science of Energy kit. Kits will be made available to participating teachers.



10:00 a.m. Electric Connections



10:30 a.m. Introduction to Energy Efficiency and Conservation



12:00 p.m. Lunch

Enjoy lunch while discussing the NEED network and the educational materials available.



12:45 p.m. Energy Efficiency Explorations and Expo

These hands-on explorations help understand the science of energy efficiency – thermal energy, radiant energy, and energy transformations.



2:00 p.m. Carbon Cycle Simulation



2:45 p.m. Paperwork!
