The Physics Department at
BRIDGEWATER STATE COLLEGE
Proudly announces the following graduate course for
Summer 2005:
PHYS 560-G02 ENERGY & THE ENVIRONMENT
This class is sponsored by the Massachusetts DOE and funded by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Renewable Energy Trust
Teachers Grades 6-9
July 25-28, 2005 and August 1-4, 2005 9:00 – 4:30
3 Graduate Credits Tuition: $752.25
Instructors: Dr. Jeff Williams & Dr. Rob Hellstrom
The institute will focus on renewable energy for grades 6-9 and will utilize state-of-the-art technology and household items to teach hands-on activities exploring energy principles. Participants will use software and sensors such as infrared thermometers, solar radiation probes, and anemometers to explore conservation and transformation of energy. For example, participants will construct and measure power production from model wind turbines. Using internet resources participants will examine renewable energy potential across the United States and design solar and wind power systems optimal for their own school settings. In particular, participants will experience solar energy potential through a field trip to the Brockton Brightfield Solar Project. We will also have a half-day workshop on offshore wind and the efforts of Cape Wind Associates. Participants will be awarded $200 to purchase resources for the classroom. There is also a stipend for several follow-up days. (30 student limit)
