CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY CHALLENGE
$500 Awards Available for K-12 Educators
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is offering awards of up to $500 per classroom to spur creative approaches to encouraging energy-efficient behavior in school, at home, and in the community. NYSERDA's Energy Smart Students program will fund up to 30 innovative projects that increase students' energy and global climate change knowledge and awareness, while providing student leadership opportunities and outreach to the community. Kindergarten through grade 12 teachers and informal educators are invited to apply. Applications must be received by September 30, 2009.
Funds can be used to purchase supplies or equipment for use in hands-on activities related to energy efficiency or for community education events. Winners will be chosen based on their creativity in delivering the climate change message and the extent to which students take a leadership role in school and community efforts. Extra points will be awarded to schools with greater than 50% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch and for projects adopting a multi-disciplinary approach involving two or more subject areas.
