Jobs at Solar One: Green Building Instructors and Curriculum Writers

Solar One seeks part time instructors and curriculum writers for our fast growing green building sector workforce training program. Solar One's Green Career Training Program offers technical training to underemployed individuals through partnerships with workforce training programs throughout the city. Most of our partners serve the formally incarcerated and/or addicted, disconnected youth, veterans, the homeless and residents of public housing. Classes are taught by experienced professionals, and enhanced by field site opportunities through Solar One's parent nonprofit organization, the Community Environmental Center (CEC) at a training lab in Long Island City. Solar One is a Building Performance Institute (BPI) affiliated training organization.

We are seeking instructors with the capacity to teach and/or develop curricula for any or all of the following courses:
Green Construction Basics: Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing
Green Building Maintenance and Custodial Services
Green Building Products and Supplies
Renovation, Repair and Painting
Construction Math
Building Performance Math
Energy Units and Conversions
BPI Air Sealing and Insulation Installation
BPI Building Analyst
Solar PV Electricity Basics
Solar PV and Thermal Installation and Sales and Marketing
All our courses introduce students to the concept and practice of energy efficiency, including methods for assessing the energy use of new and existing buildings and techniques for retrofitting buildings to increase efficiency, to include: ROI, paybacks, policies and incentives that lower energy costs and mitigating climate change, basic building science and a "whole system" approach to assessing energy usage in buildings; applying best practices in health and safety to buildings and working conditions. Solar One part time instructors and curriculum writers collaborate closely with Solar One Green Job Training Program and Career Development Directors.

Candidate Qualifications: Candidates must hold one or more industry recognized Building Trade or Building Performance certifications (BPI, HERS Rater, LEED AP or GA, EPA LCR Renovator, NABCEP, all highly desirable). Candidates must have a general background in the building trades including basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, green building maintenance and building science. Candidates must also possess a strong desire to work with unemployed and underemployed low and moderate income adults residing in environmental justice areas in New York City; be committed to a "green for all" mission; and have group facilitation and/or prior teaching experience. Prior field experience with a NYSERDA-approved contractor highly desirable.
