Director of Development
Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director (ED), the Development Director (Director) will spearhead development efforts as Solar One continues to grow. A new position in the organization, the Director will have the opportunity to build and expand the development function. The position will oversee all development efforts including expanding the current database of corporate, foundation and individual donors as well as a team of three grant writers.
Solar One Development Overview
- Current sources of funding:
- Program funding from public sources (federal, state and local)
- Program funding from foundations and corporations
- Individuals primarily via annual gala
- Fee for service
- Staff and Consultants
- 3 part time grant writers
- Event planning firm
- Other specialty consultants as needed
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute Solar One’s annual fundraising plan
- Support a staff of three grant writers
- Serve as liaison with event planners and other development consultants
- Secure ongoing financial support from foundations and corporations
- Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with individuals and major donors
- Oversee organization of annual event/gala in June
- Support Executive Director in developing relationships with new donors
- Manage the implementation of fundraising software (Zoho Database) and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing
- Develop and track proposals and reports for foundation and corporate fundraising with support from program and administrative staff
- Develop and track proposals and reports for government fundraising with support from program and administrative staff
Qualifications
- BA (required), MA (a plus)
- 5-plus years experience in development
- Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills
- Knowledge of donor database(s)
- Ability to work in a highly energized and changing environment

Green Workforce Training Program
Green Building Instructor, Full Time
Solar One’s Green Workforce Training Program seeks a seasoned construction professional to work as
a full time GREEN BUILDING INSTRUCTOR as part of a team of full and part time instructors to plan and
teach courses, help develop new curricula and assist with program administration and lab operations.
Training is delivered in hand-on interactive formats in our fully-equipped training lab. The Green
Building Instructor will report to the Solar One Training Development Manager.
Candidate Qualifications: Our courses are designed and delivered in active, hands-on formats, so we
seek a candidate with teaching experience and a minimum of 2 years of field experience in one or more
of the following areas:
• Green Construction Basics: Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing
• Green Building Maintenance (HVAC and boiler experience highly desirable)
• Multifamily Residential and Commercial Energy Auditing
• Electrical Retrofitting
• Industry recognized certifications desirable, such as BPI, GPRO, BOC, NABCEP, LEED AP, etc.
Candidates must have a strong commitment to serving individuals with significant barriers to
employment and training them for sustainable jobs. Salary in the $30k’s with benefits.
Building Performance Instructor
Requirements:
• Must have BPI Building Analyst, Envelope, or Multi Family Building Analyst or Building Operator
• Experience energy auditing, surveying, consulting, or construction trades (2 years desirable)
• Group facilitation, teaching, training, or presentation experience
• Must understand and be willing to invest heavily in serving a diverse, chronically marginalized, and underserved population
• A passion for conservation, sustainability and advancing the green economy
• Other Green Professional Certifications also highly desirable
Green Operations & Maintenance Instructor
Requirements:
• Must have worked in building maintenance & operations and have experience in the
following construction trades: HVAC, Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing (3-5 years experience
desirable)
• Some experience in group facilitation, teaching, training, or presentations
• Must understand and be willing to invest heavily in serving a diverse, chronically marginalized, and underserved population
• A passion for conservation, sustainability and advancing the green economy
• GPRO Fund +O &M / Electrical / Plumbing, LEED EB O&M, BPI Multi-Family Building Operator highly desirable
• Other Green Professional Certifications also desirable
Solar PV & Solar Thermal Instructor
Requirements:
• Must have significant experience designing and installing Solar PV and/or Thermal
• NABCEP Entry Level or Installer Certification highly desirable

Solar One Green Workforce Training Program
Solar One’s Green Workforce Training Program offers green hard skill technical training and environmental literacy education tied to the high growth areas of energy efficiency; renewable energy; green building operations and maintenance; and green infrastructure construction and landscaping. Training is delivered in hand-on interactive formats in our fully-equipped Long Island City training lab.
Our trainees include unemployed and underemployed individuals that participate in workforce training programs that serve the formerly incarcerated and/or addicted, disconnected youth, veterans, the homeless, and residents of public housing. The Green Workforce Training Program staff is dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty.

NYC K-12 Education Program
Curriculum Writer, Full time or Part time
Solar One seeks a curriculum writer and researcher to assist in the development of
sustainability curriculum for NYC high school students. The curriculum will engage today’s high
school students in sustainable design and problem solving for the energy, materials, water,
and food sectors. The curriculum uses hand-on projects to enhance Science Technology
Engineering and Math (STEM) skills while increasing ecological literacy, developing
environmental stewardship, and serving as an introduction to pathways in Green Careers. It will
address clean technologies, and economics, opportunities and challenges, motivating students
and preparing them for careers in the dynamic clean economy. The curriculum will include
technical readers and activities.
Qualifications:
- Experience working in education
- Demonstrated experience with curriculum research, development and writing, particularly in science and technology (preferably at the high school level).
- Technical knowledge of energy and other sustainability technologies, economics, and issues
- Strong writing skills to translate complex topics into engaging information that can be understood at the high school level
- Ability to be self-directed as well as work collaboratively
- Ability to work under deadlines
Desired:
- Strong ability to thoroughly research complex subjects and adeptly synthesize information (suitable for classroom curriculum) and make connections, even in less familiar subject areas
- Classroom teaching experience
- Understanding of NYC DOE

Assistant Director, High School Programs
The Assistant Director will oversee and ensure the quality of all high school programming including but not limited to:
- In-classroom delivery of Solar One curriculum in Energy, Water, Materials, and Food
- Assisting curriculum developers with both content and writing for new advanced curriculum
- Overseeing the Energy Challenge. professional development and other programmatic elements of Solar One’s high school education program
- Working with program evaluators to develop and deliver evaluation instruments
- Administering and implementing the grants that fund the programming
- Working with contractors to develop an internship program
- Supervising staff
The Assistant Director will supervise 3-5 Solar One instructors. In partnership with NYCDOE, the Assistant Director will also supervise the Sustainability Project Manager for the High School for Energy and Technology, who will be tasked with developing sustainability programming in the new high school. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Assistant Director for Instruction to develop new curriculum, with Solar One’s Green Workforce staff to develop green hard skills programming for Career and Technical Education (CTE) high schools, and with program evaluators.
The Solar One High School program focuses on developing Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) skiils in three separate pathways: a CleanTech track focusing on advanced skills in engineering, design, innovation and problems-solving in the Cleantech sector, a GreenTech track for general sustainability education and skills in building performance, efficiency, and renewables , and a Green Skills track focused on hard skills training in energy efficiency, electrical retrofitting, HVAC, auditing and solar installation.
Requirements:
- Experience working in education, preferably at the high school level
- Strong interest and technical knowledge of current and emerging energy, building performance/building science, and renewables technologies and other emerging sustainability technologies in the water, materials science and food sectors
- Demonstrated experience with curriculum development, particularly in science and technology (preferably at the high school level)
- Demonstrated aptitude for developing dynamic and innovative programming
- Supervisory and mentoring experience
- Program evaluation experience
- Strong project management skills and ability to multi-task under tight deadlines to be self-directed as well as work collaboratively
- Experience implementing and administering research grants
