ANNOUNCING THE DACUM / JOB TASK ANALYSIS ASSISTANCE PROJECT
The Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC) announces that registration is now open for our DACUM / JTA technical assistance project. (DACUM stands for Developing A CurriculUM; JTA stands for Job Task Analysis.) This four-year project is funded through ATEEC’s Resource Center grant (DUE# 1204958) from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education (ATE) division. Two-year colleges from across the U.S. are invited to apply. Five colleges per year will be selected to participate in the DACUM / JTA Project and receive ATEEC’s assistance in facilitating workshops to analyze an occupation for new program development or to update/validate an existing program. ATE Project sites will be given preference, after which participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilitation fees are covered by the grant. Facilitator travel expenses will be paid by the host college. Additional details and registration form are available on the ATEEC Web site at http://ateec.org/slideshow/dacumjta-program .
The primary goal of the DACUM / JTA Project is to build the capacity of two-year college environmental and energy programs to assist students to meet the challenges of the 21st century workplace. ATEEC facilitates a local two-day workshop on the host college’s occupation of choice. The workshop is a structured group interview with 8 to 12 of the host college’s local business and industry expert workers. Through this process, the business/industry participants define the occupation, establish the areas of competency, and list and prioritize the job tasks/competencies. ATEEC then develops a graphical representation (DACUM or JTA chart) and task list of the outcomes of the workshop.
The host college uses this chart to build or revise the competencies of the occupational program, in accordance with the needs of the real-world workplace. The tasks identified in the chart by the expert workers are used by educators and/or instructional designers to create learning or performance objectives. The objectives are the keystone of a learning framework upon which to base the design, development, or modification of an educational or training program.
The DACUM / JTA benefits for the college and local business/industry include the opportunities to:
· Identify instructional needs and gaps.
· Plan an instructional program or validate and revise an existing program.
· Design and develop or revise curriculum.
· Design and develop or revise instructional materials.
· Provide teachers and trainers with valuable feedback on emerging and future trends in a career field.
· Provide career guidance for students and trainees.
· Ensure that students and trainees will have real-world skills to bring to the workforce.
· Provide administration/management with qualitative data on curriculum validity.
· Promote business and industry “ownership” in a school or training organization’s goals.
· Assure employers that students meet business and industry job criteria and performance standards.
· Network with business personnel who may agree to collaborate with a program.
The chart and task list will also become part of ATEEC’s online resource clearinghouse of occupational analysis materials, available for free download by colleges across the nation. More details on the benefits of the DACUM / JTA process and examples of existing DACUMs and JTAs are available on the ATEEC Web site at http://ateec.org/dacums/about. Questions not answered on the site may be directed to ATEEC.
