Cavert, William M.. The Smoke of London: Energy and Environment in the Early Modern City. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, .
Abstract: The Smoke of London uncovers the origins of urban air pollution, two centuries before the industrial revolution. By 1600, London was a fossil-fuelled city, its high-sulfur coal a basic necessity for the poor and a source of cheap energy for its growing manufacturing sector. The resulting smoke was found ugly and dangerous throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, leading to challenges in court, suppression by the crown, doctors' attempts to understand the nature of good air, increasing suburbanization, and changing representations of urban life in poetry and on the London stage. Neither a celebratory account of proto-environmentalism nor a declensionist narrative of degradation, The Smoke of London recovers the seriousness of pre-modern environmental concerns even as it explains their limits and failures. Ultimately, Londoners learned to live with their dirty air, an accommodation that reframes the modern process of urbanization and industrial pollution, both in Britain and beyond.

David McDermott Hughes. Who Owns the Wind? Climate Crisis and the hope of renewable energy. Brooklyn: Verso, .
Abstract: Why the wind, and energy it produces, should not be private property

The energy transition has begun. To succeed—to replace fossil fuels with wind and solar power—that process must be fair. Otherwise, mounting pop- ular protest against wind farms will prolong carbon pollution and deepen the climate crisis. David McDermott Hughes examines that anti-industrial, anti- corporate resistance, drawing on his time spent conducting field research in a Spanish village surrounded by wind turbines.

In the lives of a community freighted with centuries of exploitation—people whom the author comes to know intimately—clean power and social justice fit together only awkwardly. A green economy will require greater efforts to get ordinary people such as these on board. Aesthetics, livelihood, property, and, most essentially, the private nature of wind resources—all these topics must be examined with fresh eyes.

Book Description
Energy: Technology and Directions for the Future presents the fundamentals of energy for scientists and engineers. It is a survey of energy sources that will be available for use in the 21st century energy mix. The reader will learn about the history and science of several energy sources as well as the technology and social significance of energy. Themes in the book include thermodynamics, electricity distribution, geothermal energy, fossil fuels, solar energy, nuclear energy, alternate energy (wind, water, biomass), energy and society, energy and the environment, sustainable development, the hydrogen economy, and energy forecasting. The approach is designed to present an intellectually rich and interesting text that is also practical. This is accomplished by introducing basic concepts in the context of energy technologies and, where appropriate, in historical context. Scientific concepts are used to solve concrete engineering problems.
The technical level of presentation presumes that readers have completed college level physics with calculus and mathematics through calculus of several variables. The selection of topics is designed to provide the reader with an introduction to the language, concepts and techniques used in all major energy components that are expected to contribute to the 21st century energy mix. Future energy professionals will need to understand the origin and interactions of these energy components to thrive in an energy industry that is evolving from an industry dominated by fossil fuels to an industry working with many energy sources.

Goodell, Jeff. Big coal: the dirty secret behind America’s energy future. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 2006.
Abstract: Few of us realize that every time we flip on a switch, we burn a lump of coal--our shiny white iPod economy is propped up by dirty black rocks. Despite a legacy that has claimed millions of lives and ravaged the environment, coal has become hot again. Our desire to find a homegrown alternative to Mideast oil, the rising cost of oil and natural gas, and the mood in Washington will soon push our coal consumption through the roof. Because we have failed to develop alternative energy sources, coal has become the default fuel for the 21st century. Veteran journalist Goodell examines the faulty assumptions underlying coal’s revival and shatters the myth of cheap coal energy. In a blend of investigative reporting, history, and business analysis, he illuminates the troubling economic imperatives America faces and the collusion of business and politics that has set us on this dangerous course.--From publisher description.

Notes: list price: 24.95 USD
Publisher's announcement: "...authors Kira Gould and Lance Hosey outline how the future of sustainability will depend on women and the perspectives they bring to every field. Drawing from conversations with nearly 200 architects, designers, activists, policymakers, writers, educators, and students, the authors conclude that women are changing how we all see our work and our world.
"Exploring a variety of topics ranging from communities to buildings to product design, the book explains, for the first time, how the sustainable design field is influenced by women and women’s ways of working. In addition to gathering input from a cross-section of individuals involved in environmental and sustainability issues, the authors surveyed a broad range of literature, reviewed a number of studies and compared statistics from various organizations. What they discovered is a real need for all of us to find more balanced ways of working and living."

Hagopian, Emily. Green Dollhouse: Creating a Doll's Eye View of a Healthier World. Kansas City, MO: Ecotone, LLC, .
Abstract: From the publisher: The first of its kind, this beautiful softcover book contains photos of winning green dollhouse designs from the 2005 Green Dollhouse Project competition, a national contest sponsored by Sustainable San Mateo County in northern California.
Although energy efficiency, water conservation, the use of nontoxic building materials and other sustainable practices are gradually making inroads into mainstream home building, many people still think of green building as a specialty subject that isn't applicable everywhere," said Jason F. McLennan, president of Ecotone. "The Green Dollhouse book will help change that perception by showing children and adults how we can all take action to make our homes healthier and more sustainable."
The book contains photos of carefully designed dollhouses along with narratives by green building experts. Each dollhouse depicts an actual scale-model home designed for active play that incorporate sustainable design features. The dollhouses successfully convey green building concepts including energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, passive solar design, environmentally preferable materials, and much more. Several howto chapters encourage others to build their own Green Dollhouse.
An exhibit of the winning green dollhouses and many others selected from the competition submittals will begin a select tour of museums in the fall. For more information about the competition, project team, sponsors and exhibit schedule see http://www.greendollhouse.org.

Jones, Christopher F.. Routes of Power: Energy and Modern America. : Harvard University Press, .
Abstract: From the publisher:
The fossil fuel revolution is usually rendered as a tale of historic advances in energy production. In this perspective-changing account, Christopher F. Jones instead tells a story of advances in energy access—canals, pipelines, and wires that delivered power in unprecedented quantities to cities and factories at a great distance from production sites. He shows that in the American mid-Atlantic region between 1820 and 1930, the construction of elaborate transportation networks for coal, oil, and electricity unlocked remarkable urban and industrial growth along the eastern seaboard. But this new transportation infrastructure did not simply satisfy existing consumer demand—it also whetted an appetite for more abundant and cheaper energy, setting the nation on a path toward fossil fuel dependence.

Between the War of 1812 and the Great Depression, low-cost energy supplied to cities through a burgeoning delivery system allowed factory workers to mass-produce goods on a scale previously unimagined. It also allowed people and products to be whisked up and down the East Coast at speeds unattainable in a country dependent on wood, water, and muscle. But an energy-intensive America did not benefit all its citizens equally. It provided cheap energy to some but not others; it channeled profits to financiers rather than laborers; and it concentrated environmental harms in rural areas rather than cities.

Today, those who wish to pioneer a more sustainable and egalitarian energy order can learn valuable lessons from this history of the nation’s first steps toward dependence on fossil fuels.

Note the mistake in the physics of the assumption, at the top of page 164, that weight makes a difference in mileage in freeway driving. A physics student should be able to reason that changing weight only makes a difference in the efficiency of acceleration and not cruising. It is interesting to note that accelerating from 30 to 60 does take 3 times as much energy as accelerating from 0 to 30 (units don't matter).

Abstract: Every angle a general physics philosopher would consider about a car is covered in this book: Thermo, drag, slip, electrochemistry, collision, kinetics, even a little chaos. The antidote to those "way things work" books that merely show diagrams of parts, as if being able to name all the components of a car had anything to do with the "how."

I read the paperback. It's rather entertaining. Formulas are written out as sentences, and advanced math is avoided completely. The chapters explore time's arrow and entropy through the history of the relevant physicists, complete with plenty of imagery.

Notes: The publisher's description: A timely rags-to-riches story, The Merchant of Power recounts how Sam Insull--right hand to Thomas Edison--went on to become one of the richest men in the world, pivotal in the birth of General Electric and instrumental in the creation of the modern metropolis with his invention of the power grid, which fuels major cities today. John Wasik, awarded the National Press Club Award for Consumer Journalism, had unprecedented access to Sam Insull's archives, which includes private correspondence with Thomas Edison. The extraordinary fall of a man extraordinary for his time is revealed in this cautionary tale about the excesses of corporate power.
