Frequently Asked Questions about ETO

Post by shawn »

Is EnergyTeachers.org for only high school teachers?
No, the founders were high school teachers, but any educator interested in energy is welcome to our network. Newsletter subscriptions go to educators of all ages, in formal and informal settings. Homeschoolers, history teachers, and all interested in physics, energy, and electronics welcome.
Is EnergyTeachers.org only for US educators?
No, educators in other nations use our resources and subscribe to our newsletter.
Is EnergyTeachers.org all about green energy, renewable energy, or alternative energy? Does it promote certain technologies?
No. Our mission does not include promotion of energy-technologies. We recognize the interest among students and educators in progressive technologies, and so much of the information here may be topically related to progressive technologies. But all energy-related topics are relevant to EnergyTeachers.org. We also are interested in other topics in physics that are useful in modern, daily life, like electronics.
Is EnergyTeachers.org a public charity?
Yes, EnergyTeachers.org is a so-called 501(c)(3) public charity. As such, donations to EnergyTeachers.org are tax-deductible according to US law; we do not lobby on behalf of candidates or specific bills; most of our business is related to science and education, not selling non-related items or services; our financial records are open to the public on the web site or by request; the majority of our financial support comes from a broad public base; and, in return, our funds are spent broadly supporting the public, without discrimination and not to serve specifically the board nor the donors.

How we (don't) make money

Post by shawn »

How do you make money to pay for everything?
Currently, we're coasting. We apply for grants, but they are few and far between. We get private donations, and we can run lean in lean years. Overhead is extremely low—Every dollar we're given goes directly to teacher-facing programs—Books and other materials, and consulting time.

How does ETO serve teachers?
  • We have a library of thousands of books, journals, pieces of curriculum materials, and equipment at our lab. Local educators visit, learn, and develop plans.
  • We visit schools to consult with teachers to create and improve lessons about energy and electronics.
  • We review materials.
  • We work on social media to inform and assist educators and the public.
  • We develop teaching expertise in special projects, like solar cookers.
  • We act as a partnering non-profit for handling grant money legally and properly.
  • We work with other organizations and businesses to serve educators.
  • We serve as an online repository of useful information that is aggregated nowhere else, like our field trip guide.
