I just read this abbreviation (still long) of a lecture by Richard Heinberg delivered to the E. F. Schumacher Society in Stockbridge, Massachusetts on October 28, 2006. It details worries about a fossil-fuel based agriculture, discusses past and future solutions to food-crises, mostly tapping into de-industrialized horticulture. Interestingly, it touches on the need for more education in agronomy and horticulture, so that there are farmers and gardeners ready for future transitions:
