Exploring the World of Active Matter

Biology, chemistry, and physics teachers are invited to apply for a unique opportunity to participate in an NSF-funded project on active matter, led by Dr. Kun-Ta Wu. This two-day summer workshop, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, scheduled for August 5-6, 2024, will delve into the fascinating world of active matter and the Vicsek model simulation.
Active matter is a diverse and rapidly-evolving field of study that examines the behavior and motion of particles that are independently maintained with a free-energy supply. These particles can be living or non-living, ranging from cells and animals to bits of catalyst and droplets. By participating in this workshop, teachers will gain a deeper understanding of this cutting-edge field and learn how to apply it to their own classroom instruction.
During the workshop, participants will explore the Vicsek model simulation, which predicts the motion of particles within an active matter system. They will also collaborate with their fellow teachers to develop classroom experiences that are standards-aligned and relevant to real-world contexts. After the workshop, participants will implement their lesson plans in the classroom and complete a reflection survey about their experiences.
In recognition of their hard work and dedication, participants will receive a certificate for 12 Professional Development Points (PDPs) upon completion of the summer workshop. In addition, those who successfully implement their classroom lesson plans will receive a $500 stipend. This is a rare and exciting opportunity for high school teachers to gain valuable knowledge and skills in a cutting-edge field, collaborate with their peers, and earn professional development credit and stipend. We encourage all interested teachers to apply for this unique opportunity by submitting their application by May 15, 2024. Email Dr. Kun-Ta Wu for more information.
