-
Increasing student ownership in the laboratory with student-built instruments
- In this workshop, physics and general science teachers learn have their students build their own instruments such as photo-gates, magnetometers, anemometers, timers, light meters, force sensors, and accelerometers. Some classrooms make their own instruments because they can't afford commercial versions, and some because they want students to learn electronics while learning the non-electroncis topic involving the instrument. A more subtle but powerful benefit is that students who make their own equipment may work harder to understand the physical phenomena the instruments help measure.
-
Understanding electric power metrics
- This workshop is open to the general public. Participants meet online in the virtual world Second Life to see how wind and other electric-power resources are measured and analyzed, with interactive virtual objects that represent in 3-D the ways experts analyze the resources.
-
Interactive circuits
- Attendees build circuits with physical inputs and/or outputs. We discuss learning about voltage, current, power, signal, and resistance; typical electrical components, and their packaging and labeling, as in resistors, capacitors, and integrated circuits; transducing sound, light, color, force; and timing and logic. Students can now work with lead-free components on a solderless breadboard that allows them to reuse components. We discuss individualized learning and metacognitive assessments for skills and concepts.
-
Build a solar cooker
- Attendees build a panel-type solar cooker for all-seasons, almost as cheap as the common pizza-box warmer, but much more effective. Associate science, technology, and engineering with a quotidian activity like cooking for lifelong learning for all. Concepts: Radiation, absorption reflection & transmission, power, energy, temperature, E-M spectrum, insolation. Participants can apply to borrow high-tech instruments like infrared cameras and waterproof temperature loggers.
-
Bikes, batteries, bodies. Energy and mechanics lessons using the bicycle.
- We will examine how learners think about energy, power, force, work, and even the electric bill when they step on a bicycle-generator and see *and feel* their effort light a bulb or charge a battery. Extensions include fighting a solar panel, powering a drill, and even a student-programmable micro-controller-based speedometer. Participants should bring bike-related lessons to share if they have any.
- Shawn Reeves from EnergyTeachers.org will bring a bike generator, meters, batteries, and various gadgetry. Participants will be able to borrow the equipment from EnergyTeachers.org for use in their classrooms.
